It's Immuni-tea Season
In the 2010 romantic action comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Scott's love interest, Ramona, asks him what kind of tea he wants—and then she gives him 16 options.
You're probably wondering why someone would need that much tea. In Ramona's case, it's just to be quirky. However, your choice could boost your immuni-tea and help you fight off winter illnesses.
And don't worry, we've narrowed the options down to four rather than 16, including:
Green tea. This tea has antioxidants that fight bacteria, reduce inflammation, prevent cell damage and stave off illness. In fact, one study found that healthcare workers who drank green tea daily for 12 weeks were 50% less likely to develop upper respiratory tract infections.
Ginger tea. Ginger helps relieve an upset stomach and contains antioxidants like iron, magnesium, vitamin B6, vitamin C and zinc to boost our immunities. However, if we do get sick, the vitamins can reduce the duration of our illnesses while the ginger eases muscle fatigue and sore throats.
Echinacea tea. While there is still some debate on whether it works, some researchers claim echinacea boosts immune function, relieves pain, reduces inflammation and has antiviral and antioxidant properties. One study found people who drank several cups of the tea while sick felt better five days sooner than those who didn't take echinacea. In addition, one review of 14 studies found echinacea reduced cold risks by 58%.
Peppermint tea. Not only is this tea festive, but it's a delicious way to feel better. Studies show peppermint can ease an upset stomach, battle headaches and thin mucus in the sinuses and throat (due to the menthol). Several studies have also found that peppermint has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Don't like tea? Hot chocolate is also on the menu, as it contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Cocoa can boost antibody levels and has important ingredients like magnesium and iron, which help the body fight and respond to infection. Just remember to make sure it's at least 70% cacao and drink it in moderation—the sugar isn't good for your waistline or teeth!
Of course, we have to spill the tea about more ways to stay healthy than just warm cups of your favorite drink. It's also important to get plenty of sleep (7 to 9 hours per night), get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week and find ways to reduce stress. And, now that the holidays are over, consider limiting your alcohol consumption, which also can decrease immune function.
Whatever you decide to sip, we hope it tastes delicious and helps you battle anything that comes your way. (In Scott's case, it was Ramona's evil exes, but we don't think tea will help if you have the same problem.)
