Physicians Regional Acquires Advanced Robotic Surgery System

(Naples, Fla) - For years, minimally invasive, robotic surgery has offered better outcomes and decreased recovery time for patients, and now Physicians Regional Healthcare System is taking that care to the next level, with a sophisticated new robotic system.
“I am so excited to work with this new robot,” says General Surgeon Jonas Mansson, M.D., chief of robotics at Physicians Regional Medical Center Pine Ridge. “The new technology allows for my patients to have minimally invasive, general surgery procedures by giving me tools that often make operating easier. This includes improving efficiency and better patient outcomes overall.”
In addition to general surgery, the system can be used for urology, colorectal, gynecology and thoracic procedures, and offers more than 150 enhancements over previous versions. Physicians Regional is adding this new robotic system to both the Pine Ridge and Collier Blvd hospital.
Major advancements include improved accuracy and precision with force-sensing technology, enhanced 3D imaging, and better ergonomics for surgeon comfort and surgical viewing.
Previous versions of robotic surgery systems relied on a surgeon’s sight to evaluate how much force to give the instruments, but new feedback technology allows surgeons to feel the push and pull of forces at the instrument tip. And, the degree of those forces can be tailored to individual providers and surgical tasks. This is especially helpful when working with delicate tissue, and studies show significantly less force is exerted on tissue with this robot version.
The system also levels up with an improved, high-definition, 3D vision system, giving surgeons a more clear, magnified view of the surgical site. This, along with more true color representation, helps with depth perception and allows surgeons to view more anatomical detail.
Like all robotic systems, the surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted system, which translates their hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.
