Physicians Regional Healthcare System is First in Southwest Florida to Acquire the Latest Robotic-Assisted Surgical System

Naples, Fla. (July 1, 2016) Physicians Regional Health Care System is the first in Southwest Florida to offer the newest generation robotic-assisted surgical system – providing surgeons with superior real time visualization, greater dexterity and precision during minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedures. The new surgical system was designed with the goal of further advancing the technology used in minimally invasive surgery. It can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, colorectal, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery.
The use of robotic-assisted surgeries continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we are at the forefront of that growth,” Brian Smith, M.D., board certified General Surgeon, and Chair of the Physicians Regional Healthcare System Robotics Steering Committee, said. “We are pleased to be the first in our area to offer the latest technology in robotic-assisted surgery as part of our continued efforts to offer significant surgical advancements to our patients.”
The new robotic-assisted surgical system supports a less-invasive technique than traditional surgery. Procedures are always performed entirely by a surgeon. After the surgical site is accessed through tiny incisions, the system translates the surgeon’s hand movement into smaller, more precise actions of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. Benefits generally associated with robotic-assisted surgery may include:
- Shorter hospital stay
- Reduced blood loss
- Reduced complications
- Reduced need for narcotic pain medicine
- Faster recovery
- Reduced scarring
By enabling efficient access throughout the abdomen or chest, the system expands upon previous generation robotic surgical systems, and features, including wristed instruments, 3D-HD visualization, intuitive motion, and an ergonomic design. The surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted surgical system, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. The new system’s immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons with a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.
“We are delighted to offer the latest, most advanced robotic-assisted surgical system to the surgeons on our medical staff. It is part of our commitment to optimizing patient care and surgical excellence,” said Scott Lowe, Market CEO for Physicians Regional Healthcare System. “Our community is fortunate to have highly skilled robotic-assisted surgeons who are trained to utilize the latest technology. Physicians Regional Healthcare System has been a leader in the area of robotic-assisted surgery for many years. We are very excited to expand our robotic surgery program with the very latest system.”
