Symptoms of Arthritis
Symptoms of arthritis mainly occur in the joints; symptoms may worsen with age. The most common sign of arthritis is joint pain, though many patients experience additional symptoms, which may include:
- Warmth in the joint
- Decreased range of motion
- Stiffness
- Pain
- Joint inflammation
- Fatigue
- Poor sleep
- Muscle aches and pains
- Tenderness
- Trouble walking or using hands
- Loss of flexibility
Common Types of Arthritis
There are two primary types of arthritis, which can affect your joints in different ways. The two main types are:
- Osteoarthritis (OA) – This is the most common type of arthritis, which can worsen as you age; in some cases, OA may worsen in a shorter period of time – especially if a person suffers an injury or infection. Osteoarthritis starts in the cartilage, eventually causing the cartilage to wear down, resulting in bone-on-bone grinding. This leads to pain and decreased range of motion.
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) – A disorder in which your immune system attacks your body tissues. This occurs not only in the joints, but in other parts of the body. RA often affects the elbows and knees, as well as the fingers and wrists, and can lead to severe deformity when left untreated. RA can eventually ruin bone and cartilage within the joints.
Common Risk Factors for Arthritis
- Obesity – Obesity causes excess stress and pressure on the joints, which may lead to a greater risk of developing arthritis.
- Previous joint injury – A previous joint injury may increase your chances of developing arthritis.
- Previous infection – A previous infection in the joints may increase your chances of developing arthritis.
- Your sex – Women are more prone to developing RA than men. OA appears frequently in both men and women.
- Age – The risk for arthritis increases with age.
- Family history – Some types of arthritis are hereditary. Talk to your doctor about your family history to learn more about your potential risk factors.
