Spine Care
The spine plays a critical role in many of the movements that occur in our bodies, including running, walking, turning, bending and much more. With 33 vertebrae, many joints, tissues and nerves that all connect to various parts of the body, the spine allows you to move with ease. When injury occurs or a disc becomes compressed, all of that fluid movement can seemingly disappear in just the blink of an eye.
At Physicians Regional Healthcare System, we know how important it is to provide specialized care for spinal conditions. Orthopedic surgeons at both Naples locations are trained and experienced in treating conditions of the spine; providers may offer customized treatment plans to alleviate pain and restore your quality of life.

Spinal Conditions That May Need Treatment
At some point in time, many people suffer from some sort of back pain. Even symptoms experienced in other parts of the body may originate in or near the spine. If you are suffering from any of the following conditions, you may need to see an orthopedic doctor for spine treatment:
- Herniated discs – Herniated discs are typically painful. They are sometimes referred to as “slipped” discs. This happens when the outer exterior of a disc (annulus) is cracked, causing part of the soft center (nucleus) to leak.
- Degenerative disc disease – This is a common condition that affects many older adults. This disease is often due to age, lifestyle changes and genetics. The disease itself happens when the discs of the spine deteriorate and weaken. The most common areas for this occurrence are the lower back and the neck.
- Lower back pain – Back pain is one of the most common complaints. Muscle strains, vertebra injury and nerve damage are all possible causes.
- Neck pain – Neck pain may be caused by a slipped disc, pinched nerve or other causes.
- Osteoarthritis – As the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis affects countless people. This type of arthritis occurs when the cartilage in your joints wears down (typically a natural result of aging). The main areas that are affected include the spine, hands, knees and hips.
- Sciatica – When a part of the sciatic nerve is compressed (typically by a herniated disc, bone spur or spinal stenosis) it can create a pain that radiates throughout your body. The sciatic nerve goes from your lower back through your hips, down your buttocks and legs. The pain from sciatica is normally experienced on just one side of the body.
- Scoliosis – An abnormal, sideways curvature of the spine, scoliosis typically occurs during puberty in an adolescent.
- Spinal stenosis – Spinal stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spine, which can put pressure on the nerves that travel throughout the spine. In many cases, spinal stenosis is caused by breakdown of bones (due to osteoarthritis).
- Spondylolisthesis – Spondylolisthesis typically occurs in the lower back. It is a condition that occurs when a vertebra slides over and in front of the vertebra beneath it. This may cause nerves to be compressed, which will cause pain or numbness in the legs.

- Discectomy – This surgical procedure will remove any damaged portion of a herniated disk in your spine; the goal is to alleviate patients of pain, weakness or numbness.
- Vertebroplasty – A minimally invasive surgery that uses injections of bone cement to seal fractures in the vertebrae. This can be a very effective treatment that provides relief from pain.
- Kyphoplasty – Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty injects bone cement into your vertebrae with the additional step of using a balloon-like device in order to create more space. This procedure helps to alleviate pain and restore height to a damaged vertebra.
- Epidural steroid injections – Epidural steroid shots are injected into the area around the spine in order to curb inflammation and reduce pain.
- Spinal cord stimulation – Stimulation to the spinal cord produced by low electrical signals in order to block pain signals from reaching the brain. This therapy requires that a signal-emitting device be implanted near the spinal cord (done using minimally invasive techniques).
