Physicians Regional Vestibular Therapy
The vestibular system detects changes in our head movement and body position to help us keep our balance. Located in the inner ear, the system is comprised of three small semi-circular canals, two sensory organs, and the vestibular nerve. When functioning properly, the system sends information from each ear to the brain which in turn uses it to maintain balance and visual stability. If there is a problem with this system, you may benefit from vestibular therapy to improve your routine daily tasks and leisure activities.
Common conditions which can benefit from vestibular rehabilitation:
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Recovery after acoustic neuroma removal
- Central or neurological vertigo
- Vestibular neuritis
- Long-term effects from Meniere’s disease
- Other conditions in the ear resulting in problems with dizziness or balance
- Ototoxicity
- Motion sensitivity
When the vestibular system experiences problems, many times the dizziness caused by it can lead to a decrease in daily activities. To prevent provoking systems, certain movements may tend to be avoided altogether. This inactivity can eventually lead to deconditioning and potentially falls and injuries.
Goals for Vestibular Therapy:
- Decrease dizziness
- Reduce the risk of falls
- Improve balance and postural control
- Improve the ability to walk
- Recommend appropriate walking aid if needed
- Remove debris from semi-circular canals to alleviate benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
- Increase independence of daily living
Based on a initial evaluation, a treatment plan will be designed and may include:
- Education of the vestibular and balance systems
- Eye-head coordination activities for gaze stabilization
- Canalith repositioning maneuver
- Balance retraining activities
- Habituation exercise to reduce position or motion-induced dizziness or vertigo
- Conditioning exercises to improve overall fitness
- A home maintenance exercise program
